The Art of Seattle CHOP (Capitol Hill Occupied Protest) — a photo gallery

July 1, 2020 by Matthew

A row of concrete traffic barricades are covered in plywood and painted with a variety of messages. This is in the Black Lives Matter protest area of Capitol Hill in Seattle.

For the purposes of this article, I will refer to the area as CHOP, which existed for a few weeks in June, 2020. This area was initially known as CHAZ for Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone but eventually transitioned to CHOP.Capitol Hill is my home. The rolling hills of the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Seattle remain near and dear to my heart.  Greenery abounds in every … [Read more...] about The Art of Seattle CHOP (Capitol Hill Occupied Protest) — a photo gallery

Photo Gallery: Pacific Northwest Spring flowers, a salve for our hearts in the time of corona virus

March 29, 2020 by Matthew

Scene in Volunteer Park in Seattle with the trunks of 100 year old trees just in time for their cherry blossoms to emerge in rains of pink cascading flowers. The lawn is green with a gravel path through it.

Introduction -- Nature is my medicineThroughout my life, in periods of darkness or profound sorrow, I've leaned into the natural world for help. Love and light always follow, even if not in the manner expected. Whether looking out my back window or actively hiking in a national park --trees, plants, animals and sunlight are my friends, bringing optimism and support that … [Read more...] about Photo Gallery: Pacific Northwest Spring flowers, a salve for our hearts in the time of corona virus

Photos that make me yearn for the old sod — County Donegal, Ireland

March 17, 2020 by Matthew

The buttery glow of a winter sunset begins to take over the gray cloudy sky behind the prominent rise of Muckish Mountain. In the foreground is abundant peat bogs and rolling hills of green pastures with sheep grazing. The is a typical landscape in Donegal, in northwest Ireland.

Welcome to County Donegal, located in the wild Northwestern section of the Republic of Ireland. Half of my heritage hails from this part of the world, and I feel a strong sense of connection to this especially mystic region of the Emerald Isle. From North Atlantic surf crashing onto broad sandy beaches to the dramatic contrasts between tranquil lakes and lofty mountains, the … [Read more...] about Photos that make me yearn for the old sod — County Donegal, Ireland

Winter hiking in Grindelwald, Switzerland: a photo gallery

January 9, 2020 by Matthew

View from a ski trail overlooking groomed ski runs with snow covered chalets leading down the mountain. In the background are the dramatic Alpine peaks of Schreckfeld and Schrekhorn. The clouds surround the peaks in a dramatic way that opens to some patches of blue sky.

To read a fun story about my ambition to reach the Top of Europe attraction while snow hiking around Grindelwald, go HERE. I was in Switzerland about 20 years ago and our aging relatives Rosie and Renee toured us all around the country. We stopped through Grindelwald briefly and I vowed I'd always return to the Alps when I could spend more time wandering in the mountains. … [Read more...] about Winter hiking in Grindelwald, Switzerland: a photo gallery

Photo Gallery: Kiev, Ukraine

November 21, 2019 by Matthew

A sweeping view of the grand square in front of St. Sofia's Cathedral in Central Kiev.

Kiev is a welcoming, energetic, intriguing city in a country struggling to maintain a unique identity in the world. The stately capitol city is bursting with tasty food, friendly people, interesting sites and Cyrillic signs. I spent a very full day in the metropolis of 2.9M people and these are a few of my favorite shots. Only have one day to spend in the Ukraine capitol of … [Read more...] about Photo Gallery: Kiev, Ukraine
