August 4, 2021 by Matthew

Matthew Kessi poses for a photo at the overlook to the Blue Basin in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The canyons are a variety of blue and green colors and continue up to grass covered slopes leading to pointed peaks. There are endless canyons in the background that flow to partly cloudy skies. Matthew is wearing a red shirt and green shorts and a backpack and blue hat. He looks sweaty, as if he is hiking.

This panoramic view of the skyline of Seattle includes the Space Needle and the Columbia Center amongst other prominent buildings. The lush blue water of the Salish Sea is rolling with gentle waves while two kayakers in bright colored boats navigate the gentle waters.

One of the impressive ice caves at Big Four Ice Caves showcases the towering mountains with waterfalls cascading down the chucks of rock amongst green shrubs. The ice cave has a waterfall in the background and the ceiling of the cave has many divers from the melting ice.

Washington State abounds with nature in every direction. While places like the expansive Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest keep a quiet existence in the Winter due to abundant snow, the Summer season offers an amazing diversity of colors and textures. Explosive berries and wildflowers framed in by proud fir trees under towering rocky peaks provide a captivating myriad of … [Read more...] about The exploding colors of Big Four Ice Caves

8 of the best things to do on Whidbey Island

July 7, 2021 by Matthew

The Coupeville Wharf is a fun thing to do on Whidbey Island. The red wood building is entirely over the water on a dock while a few boats are tied to the pier. In the foreground is a curved metal lamp with a light bulb coming from the fixture. There are a number of seagulls sitting on the point of the wooden roof. The sunset is casting a pinkish yellow glow on the hills in the background.

In the heart of the magical Salish Sea lies an island steeped in rich history. Growing up in Oregon, I didn’t know much about Whidbey Island until my friend Jerry showed me photos of a visit to friends living in a tiny farmhouse amidst a flowing field of overgrown greens — sporadic flowers pushing their way through the noise to reach the sun. Since then, I’ve always had a rich … [Read more...] about 8 of the best things to do on Whidbey Island

Day trips from Seattle — 19 of the best getaways

July 1, 2021 by Matthew

Big Four Mountain commands this landscape photo with patches of snow amongst fir forests and a mowed meadow in the foreground.

Early morning day trips from Seattle can be the perfect salve to the soul. The stress of traffic is lulled away with the aspirations of exploring and experiencing all the magic the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Even thirty minutes into the voyage, the ratio of concrete to green vastly adjusts to fir trees and roadside patches of local shrubs. With a little more time, open … [Read more...] about Day trips from Seattle — 19 of the best getaways

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
