Bracing in Bremerton — exploration in the time of the storm

January 17, 2021 by Matthew

A bronze statue of a father passing on a shipbuilding tool to his young son. They are standing in front of a giant propulsion screw of a ship.

Movement is in my bones. The same way I used to annoy coworkers in office meetings with a tapping ball point pen, I cannot seem to stay still. In the time of coronavirus I’ve turned social distancing into a tool to learn how to walk alone in nature — completely content and at peace. In this way, I’m thankful for my experiences discovering even more nooks and crannies of the … [Read more...] about Bracing in Bremerton — exploration in the time of the storm

Winter’s light at Solstice

December 21, 2020 by Matthew

Light.  This time of year the natural darkness seems to bring about inspiration guided by light.  Cross cultural references are made about stars, lamp oil, and yule logs.  Even the pre-Celtic people living ages ago in Ireland looked toward one intense ray of golden winter glow, entering a passage tomb deep within a neolithic cave -- so well engineered the stones … [Read more...] about Winter’s light at Solstice

Tesla Travels

October 25, 2020 by Matthew

A Tesla Model S sedan sits on the deck of a Washington State Ferry with open Puget Sound waters in the distance against a cloudy sky. The vehicle is a metallic gray blue and shows the prominent Tesla hood ornament on the front. There are other cars behind the Tesla and the metal structure of the ferry are painted white on the ceiling above.

Driving a Tesla is like having limitless potential in a Jetsons world where cars float in a smooth flowing atmosphere that doesn’t adhere to the rough edges of worn highways and pothole filled streets. The experience is like gliding on a well-paved forest road with gentle turns and just enough ups and downs to realize the vehicle is moving. Acceleration seems to only require a … [Read more...] about Tesla Travels

Seattle botanical gardens — the 10 best kept local secrets

August 12, 2020 by Matthew

A bright pink and yellow flower blooms open in the sunshine in the Perennial border garden of Bellevue Botanical Garden. The leaves around the bright flower are a lush green while more flowers farther away are out of focus.

A city garden, lovingly crafted by the hands of inspired green thumbs, provides one of the greatest services in an urban environment. A reminder that no matter where we are, nature is around us, flourishing and working hard to help the world persevere. Public gardens also place humanity on even ground, allowing the community at large to access the calming energy in a simple, … [Read more...] about Seattle botanical gardens — the 10 best kept local secrets

A Seattle wall

July 5, 2020 by Matthew

I'm near the India/Pakistan wall of sorts, sometime in the early part of this century. My friends and I are on a series of three motorized rickshaw cabs, working to beat the lazy sun quickly falling beyond the horizon. We’re heading to the nationalistic spectacle that’s taken place at every sunset since 1959.  The famous border wall, known as Wagah, is central to an … [Read more...] about A Seattle wall

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
