Grindelwald, Switzerland: That time I tried to outsmart the Swiss

January 20, 2020 by Matthew

A Swiss chalet near Grindelwald in the Alpine recreation area. The bronze colored walls of the building are shuttered and an expansive wood pile tucks efficiently under the wrap around deck. It's a snowy scene with a groomed trail to the right and crisp blue sky above.

To view the photo essay associated with this winter getaway, check out Winter hiking in Grindelwald, Switzerland: a photo gallery. Spending the month of January in Seattle is good medicine for me to restart some routines that got lost along the way in 2019.  I had a club membership but traveled so often I forgot the combination to my gym lock.  Food and … [Read more...] about Grindelwald, Switzerland: That time I tried to outsmart the Swiss

Reflections of Winter Solstice in the Stone Age

December 21, 2019 by Matthew

Groups of solstice goers hold hands in circles directly outside the entrance to ancient Newgrange.

Happy Winter Solstice from Newgrange, Ireland At sunrise this morning in damp, dark velvety green Ireland an amazing ritual took place at a 5,000 year old neolith known as Newgrange.  The ancient site is older than the Pyramids of Egypt and is located in one of the most sacred areas of the Emerald Isle, near where ancient kings were crowned.  Every year on a series … [Read more...] about Reflections of Winter Solstice in the Stone Age

Ukraine Week

November 22, 2019 by Matthew

St. Michaels Monastery is a complex of orthodox buildings including the older wood church with white walls and black onion dome in the foreground and the bright blue main church with golden spires in the background.

All this talk about Kyiv (Kiev) these days reminds me of my own experience in Ukraine last July, 2019.  I wasn’t sitting in a restaurant next to the American diplomats discussing official relations and military aid, but Kyiv is bustling with a feeling that you’re in the middle of a spy novel, waiting for Jason Bourne to come running out of a back alley to jump … [Read more...] about Ukraine Week

I want to come clean

October 21, 2019 by Matthew

One of two large Tetrapanax plants that's grown from a small seedling to a tree over 15 feet tall in my back yard. The leaves are sometimes four feet across and funnel water into droplets on rainy days. I want to do more to reduce my carbon footprint so that my plants won't have to work as hard.

Greetings from hot and steamy Bangkok.  I'm in SE Asia for about ten days exploring with my great friends Elliott and Brian.  We flew on a new, 16 hour nonstop flight Singapore Airlines started between Seattle and Singapore.  Amazing that with a little bit of entertainment (or the entire second season of Killing Eve) and some liquid merriment along the way, the … [Read more...] about I want to come clean

The darker side of travel – Chernobyl

July 24, 2019 by Matthew

PART ONE OF A TWO PART SERIES ON MY TRAVELS TO THE CHERNOBYL REGION, JULY 2019. PART TWO, Kessiworld review of Chernobyl experience, IS NOW LIVE. Part I: Why the interest? A few weeks ago I found myself sleepless while traveling. After trying all the tricks to get back into REM, I finally pulled out my computer and started scanning through social media which … [Read more...] about The darker side of travel – Chernobyl

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
