Thank you, Easter bunny

April 12, 2020 by Matthew Kessi

A bright collage of flowering cherry blossoms burst to life in a variety of clumps of pink flowers, each holding a tiny five sided star in the center. Several darker branches hold up all the flowering.

Resilience in the time of Corona Virus During this time of social distancing there is nothing better than a late night stroll in spring-time Seattle.  My outlet for the cornucopia of feelings and thoughts surrounding the current crisis is a moonlit escape into the grid of neighborhood streets. Where by day wings feel clipped — I was supposed to spend Easter … [Read more...] about Thank you, Easter bunny

Even birds with clipped wings can fly…

March 29, 2020 by Matthew Kessi

The delicate red flowing current is showing bright green waxy leaves with tiny veins while the pinkish purple blooms pop to life.

Travel in the time of Corona Virus It's official lockdown time here for me in Seattle. For a bird who's been all over the world on a frequent pattern of new countries, people, places and experiences, this is beginning to feel very real to me. I feel grounded, as if my wings are clipped and I can only hop a few feet away from my nest. When I'm traveling I tend to be out … [Read more...] about Even birds with clipped wings can fly…

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2020 by Matthew Kessi

Éirinn go Brách I hope you're all wearing something green today! In my self-isolation quarantine zone, I have a head of cabbage, bean soup (I don't eat meat) and lots of greens to eat to keep me fortified with the right immune boosting energy. This is a favorite day of mine because I can almost feel my Irish ancestors dancing around me, especially as I eat the … [Read more...] about Happy St. Patrick’s Day

What it’s like to explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Coba

February 27, 2020 by Matthew Kessi

The great Nohoc-Mul is the highest Mayan Pyramids and climbing to the top is still allowed. In this shot the grand blocks of stone piling up to form the giant structure are behind several jungle trees that wind their way towards the sun and cast a lovely buttery morning shadow on the dirt floor of the jungle, amongst long winding roots that make there way to soil

The ancient Mayan ruins of Coba spread over a vast area on the Yucatan Peninsula, where the major civilization lived for well over a thousand years until the arrival of Spanish explorers in the late 1490's. The bustling community of up to 50,000 competed with Chichen-Itza for regional dominance until a decline that virtually left a ghost town, used only for ceremonial needs by … [Read more...] about What it’s like to explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Coba

Happy Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2020 by Matthew Kessi

Closeup of a freshly bloomed Black Tulip Magnolia, with rich pink colored petals just beginning to relax from the tight ball of the bud. In the background is fresh green out of focus foliage.

I'm in love, and the feeling is great. Like my heart is expanding past the reaches of my chest to the larger world. It feels like something that's always existed deep in my core, but now is allowed to take on a new life with refreshed eyes. A power that slowly accumulated over miles and miles of flights while exploring 60 countries throughout the world; crossing streams, … [Read more...] about Happy Valentine’s Day
