The Art of Seattle CHOP (Capitol Hill Occupied Protest) — a photo gallery

July 1, 2020 by Matthew

A row of concrete traffic barricades are covered in plywood and painted with a variety of messages. This is in the Black Lives Matter protest area of Capitol Hill in Seattle.

For the purposes of this article, I will refer to the area as CHOP, which existed for a few weeks in June, 2020. This area was initially known as CHAZ for Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone but eventually transitioned to CHOP.Capitol Hill is my home. The rolling hills of the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Seattle remain near and dear to my heart.  Greenery abounds in every … [Read more...] about The Art of Seattle CHOP (Capitol Hill Occupied Protest) — a photo gallery

I owe my life to West Seattle

May 10, 2020 by Matthew

Alki Point Lighthouse is a great thing to do while visiting West Seattle. The pebbles of the beach lead up to larger boulders covered with driftwood. Beyond this seawall is the lighthouse with red tile roof and sharp white colored walls. The sky is blue with streaks of puffy white clouds.

Happy Mothers' DayIt was the end of the summer, 1965, and a young teacher lived in an apartment at 3625 S.W. Beach Drive in West Seattle. Fresh from two years teaching in Spain, and an additional year of Seattle fifth graders, she looked forward to another year with students in the Burien neighborhood school Gregory Heights. Her friend Mary, also returning to the US … [Read more...] about I owe my life to West Seattle

The 10 best views of the Seattle skyline

April 4, 2020 by Matthew

View of Seattle from Kerry Park on Queen Anne. In the forefront is a telescope facing towards Mt. Rainier in the background rising up above the skyline of the city of Seattle. The Space Needle graces the line of buildings in a prominent manner with the futuristic looking building. The sky is blue and the grass in the foreground amongst deciduous trees.

Seattle is an amazing city with one of the most beautiful backdrops in the world -- vast expanses of water and majestic mountains rising in all directions. The downtown area roars with skyscrapers and cranes building even more of the tall geometric shapes, while the surrounding hills provide endless rows of condo and apartment buildings as well as houses that started popping … [Read more...] about The 10 best views of the Seattle skyline

Photo Gallery: Pacific Northwest Spring flowers, a salve for our hearts in the time of corona virus

March 29, 2020 by Matthew

Scene in Volunteer Park in Seattle with the trunks of 100 year old trees just in time for their cherry blossoms to emerge in rains of pink cascading flowers. The lawn is green with a gravel path through it.

Introduction -- Nature is my medicineThroughout my life, in periods of darkness or profound sorrow, I've leaned into the natural world for help. Love and light always follow, even if not in the manner expected. Whether looking out my back window or actively hiking in a national park --trees, plants, animals and sunlight are my friends, bringing optimism and support that … [Read more...] about Photo Gallery: Pacific Northwest Spring flowers, a salve for our hearts in the time of corona virus

Rooftop bar Seattle: 10 of the best

March 4, 2020 by Matthew

View from rooftop of M Bar looking out towards Lake Union. A guest sits in a lounge chair facing the view and the fireplace next to him is idle. The lake is blue and has boats under a mostly cloudy sky.

Are there rooftop bars in Seattle? Perhaps because we are so well watered here in the Pacific Northwest, commercial real estate doesn't focus on outside seating areas, especially in the restaurant and bar scene. Still, when the sun pops out from three months worth of storm clouds, it can be nice to celebrate by sipping a favorite beverage outside, enjoying the faint Seattle … [Read more...] about Rooftop bar Seattle: 10 of the best

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
