Lake Crescent Lodge — let the soul float in nature’s magic

July 17, 2023 by Matthew

Two brown rocking chairs sit peacefully on a small entry porch outside a cabin at Lake Crescent Lodge. Three large fronds of Sword Fern rise up to the deck as a hanging begonia pot clings to the rafter. The double hung windows reflect the hundred year old charm of this cabin.

The blue depths of Lake Crescent cleanse the soul. The lake that formed millions of years ago as glaciers sliced through the terrain continues to inspire the freedom to wander -- in mind, body, and spirit. Fir trees cascade from steep peaks to the gravelly banks that welcome the slow laps of pristine glacial melt-off. The 12-mile-long lake is perhaps the flagship welcome … [Read more...] about Lake Crescent Lodge — let the soul float in nature’s magic

Overnight at Heceta Head Lighthouse — a favorite Oregon Coast experience

October 27, 2021 by Matthew

Oregon Coast scene featuring Heceta Head Lighthouse and the nearby Bed and Breakfast with layers of surf floating in and pounding on the rocks. The mountains rise up, covered in evergreen trees.

Visiting the Oregon Coast is coming home for me.  I’ve only ever known the waves crashing on the sand or spitting up through rock stacks.  The salty mist seems to cover everything with a sticky resin that helps me connect to the wild beauty of the State that raised me.  I set out on an adventure from Seattle to re-engage my longing to connect with familiar and … [Read more...] about Overnight at Heceta Head Lighthouse — a favorite Oregon Coast experience

Exploring Paradise at Mt. Rainier — National Park escape

October 13, 2021 by Matthew

A beautiful landscape of reds and oranges on the path leading up from Paradise on Mt. Rainier. The mountain is already covered with a dusting of snow which pops against the blue sky.

Paradise Mt. Rainier is the premier offering of beautiful Mt. Rainier National Park. The 14,411 feet peak towers above the Seattle-Tacoma metropolis in Washington State for all the world to see. At least, when she wants you to see her! Locals usually say something like, “When the mountain is out” to indicate clear viewing of what the Coast Salish call Tahoma or other names … [Read more...] about Exploring Paradise at Mt. Captain Whidbey — all you need to know to enjoy the island hotel in peaceful Penn Cove

October 19, 2020 by Matthew

Matthew Kessi peers from a window on the second floor of Captain Whidbey, which is a historic log cabin lodge on the banks of Penn Cove. The sun is shining through some fir trees in the distance.

It's amazing that such a place like Whidbey Island exists mere minutes away from a sprawling Seattle metropolis, and the twenty minute Mukilteo to Clinton Ferry is all that's needed to refresh the canvas to begin a new adventure. The long and narrow stretch of land takes command in the Puget Sound, spanning 55 miles -- from the Clinton Ferry Terminal (on the south) to dramatic … [Read more...] about Captain Whidbey — all you need to know to enjoy the island hotel in peaceful Penn Cove

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
