What it’s like to explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Coba

February 27, 2020 by Matthew

The great Nohoc-Mul is the highest Mayan Pyramids and climbing to the top is still allowed. In this shot the grand blocks of stone piling up to form the giant structure are behind several jungle trees that wind their way towards the sun and cast a lovely buttery morning shadow on the dirt floor of the jungle, amongst long winding roots that make there way to soil

The ancient Mayan ruins of Coba spread over a vast area on the Yucatan Peninsula, where the major civilization lived for well over a thousand years until the arrival of Spanish explorers in the late 1490's. The bustling community of up to 50,000 competed with Chichen-Itza for regional dominance until a decline that virtually left a ghost town, used only for ceremonial needs by … [Read more...] about What it’s like to explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Coba

Grindelwald, Switzerland: That time I tried to outsmart the Swiss

January 20, 2020 by Matthew

A Swiss chalet near Grindelwald in the Alpine recreation area. The bronze colored walls of the building are shuttered and an expansive wood pile tucks efficiently under the wrap around deck. It's a snowy scene with a groomed trail to the right and crisp blue sky above.

To view the photo essay associated with this winter getaway, check out Winter hiking in Grindelwald, Switzerland: a photo gallery.Spending the month of January in Seattle is good medicine for me to restart some routines that got lost along the way in 2019.  I had a club membership but traveled so often I forgot the combination to my gym lock.  Food and drink … [Read more...] about Grindelwald, Switzerland: That time I tried to outsmart the Swiss

Newgrange Ireland winter solstice. What it’s like to experience the shortest day of the year in a Stone Age neolith.

December 21, 2019 by Matthew

The rays of sunlight beginning to make way into the chamber inside Newgrange.

My Irish ancestors might've wandered the same hills throughout the Boyne Valley thousands of years ago, and I feel their energy as hundreds of kindred spirits join hands in a circle to honor the shortest day of the year with a minute of strikes on a ceremonial gong held by a woman dressed in white. The Newgrange Ireland winter solstice experience brings to life mystical vibes … [Read more...] about Newgrange Ireland winter solstice. 5 travel thank you gifts

November 9, 2019 by Matthew

House all set up for the holiday with a tray of glassy baby on the dining room table and a lighted tree in the window of the house.

Like many of you, I'll be traveling this holiday season to see my east coast family in Philadelphia. It's always important to appreciate your hosts, and while I'm a very last minute shopper, I have ideas for 5 travel thank you gifts. Think light weight items that remain staples for offering gratitude in the holiday tradition. Little somethings that can easily wrap up and go … [Read more...] about 5 travel thank you gifts

I want to come clean

October 21, 2019 by Matthew

One of two large Tetrapanax plants that's grown from a small seedling to a tree over 15 feet tall in my back yard. The leaves are sometimes four feet across and funnel water into droplets on rainy days. I want to do more to reduce my carbon footprint so that my plants won't have to work as hard.

Greetings from hot and steamy Bangkok.  I'm in SE Asia for about ten days exploring with my great friends Elliott and Brian.  We flew on a new, 16 hour nonstop flight Singapore Airlines started between Seattle and Singapore.  Amazing that with a little bit of entertainment (or the entire second season of Killing Eve) and some liquid merriment along the way, the … [Read more...] about I want to come clean

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
