Where to begin a journey learning about the Coast Salish People — museums & art around Seattle

September 24, 2021 by Matthew

A traditional canoe used by Coast Salish People, carved from cedar and painted with ceremonial colors. In this case the bow is yellow with orange and black markings.

About 12,000 years ago, the last great glacier smothering Western Washington crawled through the path of least resistance, leaving behind the rolling islands and deep waters comprising the Salish Sea. Since then, people have lived in this part of the world, basking in the beauty and bounty of the land. Over time, tribal structures developed and the Coast Salish People … [Read more...] about Where to begin a journey learning about the Coast Salish People — museums & art around Seattle

The best way to revive in a Salish Sea day trip — Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula

August 25, 2021 by Matthew

This old piano sits under the canopy of a beautiful fern garden on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. The piano is falling apart and seeming to be absorbed into the rich forest.

These are challenging times.  I won’t give specific negativities airtime in this article, but it’s hard to deny the calamities that seem to exist in every corner of our local atmosphere and across the globe.  When I get the urge to just bury my head into the sand, I know it’s time to reconnect with the land.   What do I mean by reconnecting with the … [Read more...] about The best way to revive in a Salish Sea day trip — Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula

8 of the best things to do on Whidbey Island

July 7, 2021 by Matthew

The Coupeville Wharf is a fun thing to do on Whidbey Island. The red wood building is entirely over the water on a dock while a few boats are tied to the pier. In the foreground is a curved metal lamp with a light bulb coming from the fixture. There are a number of seagulls sitting on the point of the wooden roof. The sunset is casting a pinkish yellow glow on the hills in the background.

In the heart of the magical Salish Sea lies an island steeped in rich history. Growing up in Oregon, I didn’t know much about Whidbey Island until my friend Jerry showed me photos of a visit to friends living in a tiny farmhouse amidst a flowing field of overgrown greens — sporadic flowers pushing their way through the noise to reach the sun. Since then, I’ve always had a rich … [Read more...] about 8 of the best things to do on Whidbey Island

June 2, 2021 by Matthew

Did I mention I grew up in Northwest Oregon, near Astoria? In my About me section there is more information about my early life in this part of the world. Now that I live in Seattle I find myself yearning to return home and a weekend getaway to Astoria, Oregon perfectly fits the bill. I’ve traveled to this seafaring city at the Mouth of the Columbia River many times from … [Read more...] about A weekend in Astoria, Oregon — a great getaway itinerary

My 10 favorite things to do in Astoria, Oregon

April 7, 2021 by Matthew

A chrome mechanical binocular will offer a closer look at the sights in the background for only 25 cents. The grass trails down to evergreen trees and eventually the waters of the Columbia River.

This is a love letter to Astoria, Oregon. I have fond memories of spending time in this coastal enclave growing up -- regularly visiting a favorite baby sitter whose family moved down the river. In fact, she took me to see Star Wars for the first time at the Liberty Theatre (just recently renovated downtown.) I continue to explore the area on regular trips home to see family … [Read more...] about My 10 favorite things to do in Astoria, Oregon

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
