Tiger Town Brewing — Surprising kicks on Route 26

May 23, 2021 by Matthew

The bar inside the cozy refined country brewpub Tiger Town Brewing. The shelfs are full of various unique bottles of whiskey and other familiar items as well as fresh lemons and juicers on the counter.

US Highway 26 starts near Astoria, Oregon, and wanders through both countryside and cities, including Portland and Boise. The route traverses a historic native trail through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, as well as parts of the Oregon Trail, finally reaching Interstate 80 in Nebraska. Somewhere in the middle of Oregon, Route 26 passes through the tiny town of … [Read more...] about Tiger Town Brewing — Surprising kicks on Route 26

What kind of ancestors do we want to be?

May 9, 2021 by Matthew

A dead miniature tree leans from out of a broken clay pot in a museum piece. The tree is white and several spindly branches line the trunk up and down.

On this Mother’s Day, among many things, I’m thankful to my mom, Maureen Kessi, for inspiring the love of nature and gardening within me — a gift that continues to provide peace, comfort, and balance in my life.  In fact, we’ve spent many Mother’s Day outings together touring local gardens and exploring flowers, ferns, and mushrooms, amongst all other organic … [Read more...] about What kind of ancestors do we want to be?

Vibrant colors of the Painted Hills tell me to chill

April 25, 2021 by Matthew

I want to see it all.  Her bands of red, gold and black, flowing down the hills like blood washing from the sea after a battle.  This battle took place over millions of years, revealing the magic of vibrant hues little by little as the wind, water and air chipped away at the history of geological Oregon, entombed by a thick layer of lava 30 million years … [Read more...] about Vibrant colors of the Painted Hills tell me to chill

Journey to a hole in the wall

April 11, 2021 by Matthew

Exploration calls me and I answer.  Usually, the opportunity is clear and the conditions are hospitable — like a fresh breezy day last Spring at Deception Pass.  And my quest to see, experience, and connect with the world comes together like a patchwork quilt with sometimes clear blue fabric.  Other times, the sky is a darker color, and the call to adventure … [Read more...] about Journey to a hole in the wall

Snowflakes, dancing light and the Milky Way — love is in the air

February 14, 2021 by Matthew

Snow crystals pile up on a budding Daphne bloom, making it's way to push through the snow. The green leaves are light yellow on the ends.

Love is in the air, quite literally, as fluffy snowflakes grace the sky in front of my home.  The gentle pieces of frozen particles drift aimlessly to the ground, finding their way into unusual parts of plants, adorning giant trees, and drifting through the quiet streets like frosting on a cake.  It feels as if Mother Nature is giving us a nod of love — in the form of … [Read more...] about Snowflakes, dancing light and the Milky Way — love is in the air

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
