The 10 Best Seattle Parks for Social Distancing

October 7, 2020 by Matthew

“The popular parks in Seattle are frequented for very good reasons, indeed — they’re resplendent. However, with a little imagination and two ounces of additional effort, you can be enjoying wide-open parks, socially distanced, with the space needed to frolic in mind, heart, and body.”Matthew Kessi - Kessi WorldCheck out my recent collaboration with Just Your Suitcase … [Read more...] about The 10 Best Seattle Parks for Social Distancing

Seattle P-Patch photos — community gift of color In unexpected corners

September 29, 2020 by Matthew

Tomatoes of varying degree of ripeness cling to the vines in this up close photo of a P-Patch garden.

All over Seattle there are patches of green. Parks, wetlands, greenways abound in just about every corner of the city. With an even more careful search, tinier spaces reveal themselves — maybe a vacant corner lot or a critical slope on one of many hillsides. These spaces are known as P-Patch community gardens, and they light up all summer, hosting everything from chard to … [Read more...] about Seattle P-Patch photos — community gift of color In unexpected corners

All you need to navigate the Washington State ferries

September 25, 2020 by Matthew

A Washington State Ferry crosses a channel of the Puget Sound, en route to the Olympic Peninsula. The snow capped mountains shine in front of a blue sky and layers of evergreen trees are seen closer to the ferry, which glides through lightly rolling water.

Water is a way of life in the Pacific Northwest. From the vast Pacific Ocean to the resource-rich Salish Sea, our world is cleansed with the daily tides that bring in life and wash away the rest. In the early days, before roads dissected the lands around Washington State, hundreds of small boats known as “Mosquito Fleet” dotted the salty waterways, transporting people and goods … [Read more...] about All you need to navigate the Washington State ferries

Tokeland Hotel — spiritual oasis of the Washington Coast

September 17, 2020 by Matthew

The front view of the Tokeland Hotel, which is Washignton State's oldest continuous operating hotel. The wood siding is a blueish green color and the windows on each of three stories have eight panes each with white trim. There is a strong of lights running across a gathering area on the lawn in front of the hotel with four rustic picnic tables. The sky is blue with white puffy clouds.

In order to write a review of the Tokeland Hotel, a gem that hugs a tiny spit of sandy land surrounded by Shoalwater Bay on the Washington Coast, it is first important to point out that my filter for any lodging location is first and foremost about the heart. I look for a  feeling of home that comes from the joy of carefully curated aesthetic, combined with thoughtful … [Read more...] about Tokeland Hotel — spiritual oasis of the Washington Coast

Emerging through the smoke towards renewal

September 13, 2020 by Matthew

A Smokey the Bear brown medal with beige print. It is a circle and he is in the middle looking directly toward the audience.

I loved Smokey the Bear growing up — probably because his story of renewal was inspiring to me. Out of the charcoal of a tinderbox forest fire in New Mexico, he was rescued, made a “spokes-bear”, and inspired generations to come. I remember Smokey saying, “Only YOU can prevent forest fires.” So I wonder, as my beloved Pacific Northwest burns in so many different fires and the … [Read more...] about Emerging through the smoke towards renewal

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
