A Seattle wall

July 5, 2020 by Matthew

I'm near the India/Pakistan wall of sorts, sometime in the early part of this century. My friends and I are on a series of three motorized rickshaw cabs, working to beat the lazy sun quickly falling beyond the horizon. We’re heading to the nationalistic spectacle that’s taken place at every sunset since 1959.   The famous border wall, known as Wagah, is central … [Read more...] about A Seattle wall

The power of uncomfortable

June 15, 2020 by Matthew

A large crowd marches down a steep roadway in Seattle, Washington towards a bridge with an interstate sign directing traffic South to Tacoma and two red stoplights. The people are holding various signs that promote Black Lives Matter and other slogans like Silence is Violence. In the background are other city buildings, including a sliver of the tan colored municipal jail.

First stop, Malaysia My first ever trip to Asia was exciting but also very uncomfortable. I traveled from Portland, Oregon to Malaysia by way of Los Angeles, Honolulu, Seoul, Singapore and finally Kuala Lumpur. Although I’d already started my airline career, my tenure wasn’t long enough to earn offline airline flight benefits and I purchased a sketchy airline ticket that … [Read more...] about The power of uncomfortable

Where were you when the volcano blew?

May 18, 2020 by Matthew

Photo from USGS of Mt. St. Helens taken during the famous eruption on May 18, 1980 from an airplane flying by. The round mountain is seen with gray and melted snow around the edges and a huge plume of ash rising miles up into the cloudy sky.

40 year anniversary of the Mount St. Helens volcanic blast When I was seven I remember taking an end-of-the-year Sunday school field trip.  My Aunt Barbara was our teacher, and cousin Monica and I played in the back seat of the silver Toyota Corolla as she drove toward a waterway in the dike area of Scappoose. All at once, she stopped the car in the middle of the … [Read more...] about Where were you when the volcano blew?

I owe my life to West Seattle

May 10, 2020 by Matthew

Alki Point Lighthouse is a great thing to do while visiting West Seattle. The pebbles of the beach lead up to larger boulders covered with driftwood. Beyond this seawall is the lighthouse with red tile roof and sharp white colored walls. The sky is blue with streaks of puffy white clouds.

Happy Mothers' Day It was the end of the summer, 1965, and a young teacher lived in an apartment at 3625 S.W. Beach Drive in West Seattle. Fresh from two years teaching in Spain, and an additional year of Seattle fifth graders, she looked forward to another year with students in the Burien neighborhood school Gregory Heights. Her friend Mary, also returning to the … [Read more...] about I owe my life to West Seattle

The soul of a souvenir

April 29, 2020 by Matthew

This prayer wheel comes from a Tibetan monastery in the Ladakh region of India. The round metal casing is a rubbed bronze color and a small bronze chain connects the main cavity of the prayers to a small ball that is used to twirl the wheel around. On the top of the wheel are decorative gems of red and aqua and the top has a pointed hat like nob.

Nowadays, confined to my home in Seattle, there isn’t much travel in my life — at least in the same vein as pre-corona times. Wings feel clipped but movement is still my friend and I can hop along with the bunnies late at night. Nature is coming alive in spring with flowers and new buds in every direction, so there is still optimism and light in the air.  The … [Read more...] about The soul of a souvenir

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
