Missing bustle and broken giraffes — Airbnb host reflections a year into the pandemic

January 31, 2021 by Matthew

Wei was an eight year old boy from China, who walked with a heavy thunder more appropriate for a middle aged lumberjack exhausted from a day working deep in the woods. Despite my asking him to mind the guests sleeping right below, he continued to pound his feet harder on the floor, driving me to offer a stern look with an elevated voice to ask him, again, to walk like a … [Read more...] about Missing bustle and broken giraffes — Airbnb host reflections a year into the pandemic

Bracing in Bremerton — exploration in the time of the storm

January 17, 2021 by Matthew

A bronze statue of a father passing on a shipbuilding tool to his young son. They are standing in front of a giant propulsion screw of a ship.

Movement is in my bones. The same way I used to annoy coworkers in office meetings with a tapping ball point pen, I cannot seem to stay still. In the time of coronavirus I’ve turned social distancing into a tool to learn how to walk alone in nature — completely content and at peace. In this way, I’m thankful for my experiences discovering even more nooks and crannies of the … [Read more...] about Bracing in Bremerton — exploration in the time of the storm

Portal to a new world — happy 2021

January 3, 2021 by Matthew

A view through an airplane window looking out at mountains covered in snow.

Friday morning, January 1, 2021, I awoke bright and early in the misty dawn of beach-y Fort Lauderdale. The sun was just beginning to show her hues of purple and pinks as if painting “The dawn of a new year.” A light breeze, refreshingly free from humidity, blew down the outside walkway of my hotel, which would be cold for Florida standards but just the right amount of crisp … [Read more...] about Portal to a new world — happy 2021

Pringles along the Taoist “Way” — celebrate the little things

November 8, 2020 by Matthew

Bright red autumn leaves on a lone tree branch shine in the sun amongst a blue sky backdrop.

Friday, November 6, 2020Hollywood couldn’t probably write a better cliff hanger than this current election saga — with people seemingly counting every single ballot in the current US election by hand. One… two… three… four… A slow drip of information is currently permeating through the media as the world watches with bated breath. While it’s super easy for me to get sucked into … [Read more...] about Pringles along the Taoist “Way” — celebrate the little things

Tesla Travels

October 25, 2020 by Matthew

A Tesla Model S sedan sits on the deck of a Washington State Ferry with open Puget Sound waters in the distance against a cloudy sky. The vehicle is a metallic gray blue and shows the prominent Tesla hood ornament on the front. There are other cars behind the Tesla and the metal structure of the ferry are painted white on the ceiling above.

Driving a Tesla is like having limitless potential in a Jetsons world where cars float in a smooth flowing atmosphere that doesn’t adhere to the rough edges of worn highways and pothole filled streets. The experience is like gliding on a well-paved forest road with gentle turns and just enough ups and downs to realize the vehicle is moving. Acceleration seems to only require a … [Read more...] about Tesla Travels

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
