Circle of life of a volcano — visit Mount St. Helens

May 18, 2020 by Matthew

The entrance sign to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The sign is housed on a rock wall and sits on the side of a steep hill facing the snow covered volcano in the distance. The grass near the sign is bright green with the blue sky.

In this article I'll provide a great day-trip itinerary to enjoy the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument from Portland, Seattle or points in between. Mother Nature wakes upFor most of the 20th century, Mount St. Helens was a quintessential icon of raw Pacific Northwest beauty. Climbers regularly summited her 9,360 foot peak and an assortment of recreation activities … [Read more...] about Circle of life of a volcano — visit Mount St. Helens

The soul of a souvenir

April 29, 2020 by Matthew

This prayer wheel comes from a Tibetan monastery in the Ladakh region of India. The round metal casing is a rubbed bronze color and a small bronze chain connects the main cavity of the prayers to a small ball that is used to twirl the wheel around. On the top of the wheel are decorative gems of red and aqua and the top has a pointed hat like nob.

Nowadays, confined to my home in Seattle, there isn’t much travel in my life — at least in the same vein as pre-corona times. Wings feel clipped but movement is still my friend and I can hop along with the bunnies late at night. Nature is coming alive in spring with flowers and new buds in every direction, so there is still optimism and light in the air. The … [Read more...] about The soul of a souvenir

Photo Gallery: Pacific Northwest Spring flowers, a salve for our hearts in the time of corona virus

March 29, 2020 by Matthew

Scene in Volunteer Park in Seattle with the trunks of 100 year old trees just in time for their cherry blossoms to emerge in rains of pink cascading flowers. The lawn is green with a gravel path through it.

Introduction -- Nature is my medicineThroughout my life, in periods of darkness or profound sorrow, I've leaned into the natural world for help. Love and light always follow, even if not in the manner expected. Whether looking out my back window or actively hiking in a national park --trees, plants, animals and sunlight are my friends, bringing optimism and support that … [Read more...] about Photo Gallery: Pacific Northwest Spring flowers, a salve for our hearts in the time of corona virus

5 travel thank you gifts

November 9, 2019 by Matthew

House all set up for the holiday with a tray of glassy baby on the dining room table and a lighted tree in the window of the house.

Like many of you, I'll be traveling this holiday season to see my east coast family in Philadelphia. It's always important to appreciate your hosts, and while I'm a very last minute shopper, I have ideas for 5 travel thank you gifts. Think light weight items that remain staples for offering gratitude in the holiday tradition. Little somethings that can easily wrap up and go … [Read more...] about 5 travel thank you gifts

Ten ways to reduce travel carbon footprint

October 9, 2019 by Matthew

One of two large Tetrapanax plants that's grown from a small seedling to a tree over 15 feet tall in my back yard. The leaves are sometimes four feet across and funnel water into droplets on rainy days. I want to do more to reduce my carbon footprint so that my plants won't have to work as hard.

I want to come clean. I love to travel. I love airplanes. I love to fly. I love to GO. But my love of GO as a way to reach my dreams and goals around traveling and connecting with the world involves a size 16 carbon footprint. So when I say I love the planet I have to ask myself, "is this really true?" Do I care enough to make hard choices, sacrifices or do I just expect … [Read more...] about Ten ways to reduce travel carbon footprint

I would like to acknowledge that much of my inspiration comes from living on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
