Travel Store

Preparing to head out to Cuba for two weeks with my Timbuktu backpack/duffel in March 2017. This was the perfect size to keep free and flowing and I appreciated the durability and water resistant nature of the simple design.

Luggage

Travel bags are like friends. Some are for a reason, a season or a lifetime. I tend to look for luggage that lasts for a lifetime, but reasons and seasons can also be important. I normally use a roll bag for trips over five days, but for long weekends or really light travel my go-to bag is by Timbuktu. I’ve used the one shown in the photo above for the past three years and it’s fantastic. I prefer a simple streamlined look, black in color and not complicated. Water resistant is also helpful and enough room to carry an extra pair of shoes and clothing for a long weekend. In fact, I used this bag for two weeks traveling through Cuba and it was perfect. My exact model is no longer on the product line but the three below are the closest versions to my favorite.

Socks and keeping warm

Socks are very important when traveling, especially if you plan to walk or hike a lot. I love SmartWool products and appreciate their comfort and durability as well as versatility to keep your feet warm in colder climates and the cooling effect in warmer areas. My go-to for almost 20 years.

Also, as we approach the wet fall and colder winter months it’s on my mind that silk underwear is perfect for travel because it’s light weight for packing but super warm and comfortable on the skin. Also easy to clean and dry. Check out the link below. SmartWool has a version of long underwear that I used all last winter in Ireland, Switzerland and Greenland. A little heavier than silk but still easy to clean and dry. Take a look.

Shoes

Asolo are my favorite outdoor sports shoes, and I’ve used this brand since 2009 when I hiked to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing Asolo Fugitive GTX boots. They’re still going strong ten years later and the updated version is shown below.

The hiking boots are usually too bulky for most trips, so about a year ago I picked up a pair of Asolo Pipe GV Mountain Shoes (the updated version shown below.) I was preparing to head out on a long series of journeys to places like Ireland, Switzerland, Greenland, Vietnam with countless miles of walking/hiking in town and country. These shoes are great if you really want to travel light with only one pair of shoes that can be versatile enough for city, country, light hiking and even snow sports (with gators.)

Finally, my favorite brand for flip-flops, thongs, or slippers (depending on your regional preference) when traveling and around the home are Olukai, also shown below.

Journals

I still love to have a physical book to use for writing when I travel. Helpful for notes to a destination or scribbling travel details while jet lagged early in the morning. These shown below are a few I use and love and recommend. With Moleskine I prefer the dotted or boxes rather than lined.
