Portal to a new world — happy 2021

January 3, 2021 by Matthew

A view through an airplane window looking out at mountains covered in snow.

Friday morning, January 1, 2021, I awoke bright and early in the misty dawn of beach-y Fort Lauderdale. The sun was just beginning to show her hues of purple and pinks as if painting “The dawn of a new year.” A light breeze, refreshingly free from humidity, blew down the outside walkway of my hotel, which would be cold for Florida standards but just the right amount of crisp … [Read more...] about Portal to a new world — happy 2021

2020 North America wish list

December 5, 2019 by Matthew

This is the title photo for the list of top 10 places to visit in North America and features a guitar and cowboy hat sitting on top of cowboy rope with a horseshoe below.

The late 70’s and early 80’s were formative years for me. Given the absence of any internet, my siblings and I had the Sears catalog to peruse as kids. Sometime in early fall the Christmas edition arrived to huge fanfare in our home, providing a particularly memorable way to get excited for the holiday.  If I had the chance to steal it away from my older brother, the … [Read more...] about 2020 North America wish list

Saarinen TWA Terminal Hotel, a photo gallery

October 18, 2019 by Matthew

Outside view from JFK Terminal 5 looking toward the iconic Eero Saarinen terminal building completed in 1962 for TWA. In the forefront is a vintage TWA Super Constellation, also know as the "Connie."

The Eero Saarinen designed TWA Terminal Hotel is the Disneyland for airline geeks! If you've already checked out my avgeek background, it won't surprise you that sometimes I feel like I was a pilot in a previous life. Probably one who flew through JFK many times. Maybe even walked the red carpets of the Eero Saarinen designed TWA Terminal, which is now a fabulous bygone-era … [Read more...] about Saarinen TWA Terminal Hotel, a photo gallery

Sleeping car experience on long-distance Amtrak train Empire Builder, from Seattle to Chicago.

August 27, 2019 by Matthew

Waking up in the middle of the Rocky Mountains in the sleeping car of long-distance Amtrak train Empire Builder is an amazing experience. Acres of fir trees race by as we weave in and out of rushing mountain streams, the tracks constantly turning. The train pulls into the Whitefish, Montana station, giving us our first chance to step onto stable ground since leaving Seattle … [Read more...] about Sleeping car experience on long-distance Amtrak train Empire Builder, from Seattle to Chicago.

Three nature packed days in Sitka, Alaska

August 14, 2019 by Matthew

Sealions off the coastline of Sitka, Alaska hang out on a buoy without a care in the world.

Three nature packed days in Sitka, Alaska is a great idea, especially in the summer. We're on the water in a the bay outside Sitka, Alaska on a 24 foot aluminum fishing boat. The six of us include the guide and the motor is stopped as we gaze out into the icy blue waters, looking for signs of life. I'm on the bow of the boat looking toward 11 o'clock just as a humpback … [Read more...] about Three nature packed days in Sitka, Alaska
